The 2009 Essay topic was: Leiden: A Stepping Stone to the New World

*** An excerpt from the winning 2009 essay by Michelle Haines ***

The years in Leiden served as a vital bridge for the Pilgrims, linking their former life in England to their future life in the New World. Wanting to escape the oppressive rule of both King James I and the Anglican established church, the Separists moved to Amsterdam in 1608. One year later they relocated to Leiden. From 1609 to 1620, Leiden proved a safe harbor for religious tolerance. However, the challenges that these Englishmen faced in Holland eventually propelled them across the ocean to North America.
The stay in Leiden was a stepping stone that later produced both religious and civil freedom.
